About Casamigos: Tequila with a Cult Following

In 2013, George Clooney founded Casamigos tequila with his famous pals Rande Gerber and Mike Meldman, and it wasn’t long before their new tequila brand took the agave spirits market by storm. Just one year later, Casamigos tequila won Double Gold in the prestigious San Francisco Spirits Competition!

So, what inspired these three amigos to make their own tequila? Clooney says that they sensed a need for tequila that you wouldn’t want to mask with lime, salt, or sugary mixers. To achieve their goal, the trio turned to old-world wisdom. Casamigos employees hand-select each blue weber agave plant from the rich, red clay of the Jalisco Highlands in Mexico. Then they slow-roast the piñas—the agave hearts—in traditional clay ovens. The result? Tequila that’s just as ideal for sipping as for making our handcrafted cocktails at Ruth’s Chris. Featured Tequila Cocktails on the Casamigos Dinner Menu

August’s TasteMaker dinner presents four cocktails crafted with Casamigos tequila served alongside five chef-inspired courses:

Amuse Bouche: Casa NOLA

To start the evening, we gave a New Orleans classic, the Pimm’s cup, a tequila twist. Casamigos Blanco takes the place of gin alongside club soda and lemon juice, while black salt and fresh fruit garnish the rim. At the same time, snack on a tetela: grilled corn masa dough filled with black beans, shredded quesillo, and tomatillo relish and then topped with Mexican crema.

First Course: Sueño Tropical Fizz

Another Casamigos Blanco creation, this cocktail features pineapple-cucumber fresca, fresh lemon juice, agave, and club soda. Alternate sips with bites of the tortita ahogada, a Jaliscan handheld that directly translates to, “submarine sandwich.” We fill the Guadalajaran sourdough bread with pork carnitas and refried beans and serve it swimming in hot sauce.

Second Course: Cristalino Citrus Margarita

What kind of tequila tasting event would this be without a margarita? This one showcases the Casamigos Cristalino, aged in white oak barrels and then filtered in charcoal to retain the notes of the cask while intensifying the flavor of the agave. The filtration process also removes the golden color of the reposado, resulting in the tequila’s crystal-clear appearance—hence the name. To make the margarita, we add fresh orange and lime juice, salted agave, and a spritz of orange blossom water. Sip and savor with our birria taco of chicken and lamb, served with Mexican rice and fried beans.

Entrée: Sparkling Añejo Sunset

And of course, the evening wouldn’t be complete without a Ruth’s Chris steak, either! Topped with tomato and roasted poblano peppers, this filet comes with potatoes and chorizo plus a Mexican street corn salad. As for the cocktail, Casamigos Añejo takes center stage. “Old” in English, Añejo invokes tradition with a slow fermentation process that gives the tequila a caramel color and flavor. In our sparkling sunset creation, we combine it with amaro for the hue and sparkling wine for the bubbles.

Dessert Course: Cocadas de Chocolate

Last but not least, don’t forget dessert! Our exclusive tequila tasting event ends on a sweet note with these chocolate-coconut treats drizzled with crème anglaise. We’ll say “adios” to tequila for this final course, providing coffee and tea service.

If you’re a foodie, then you’re likely familiar with The Joy of Cooking, Irma Rombauer’s internationally renowned cookbook. The last name is certainly no coincidence; Irma’s great-nephew founded the vineyard! In 1972, Koerner Rombauer and his wife, Joan, moved to Napa in 1972 with their two kids, two horses, and five dogs in tow.

Eight years later, the couple officially established Rombauer Vineyards. Known for rule-breaking blends, this modern California winery certainly isn’t held prisoner by tradition. On the contrary, Chrissy Wittman and her team use grapes from more than 100 growers—including several unusual varietals—to create captivating wines with a cult following.

Prisoner Wine Company and the Rebirth of the Red Blend

Inspired by Spanish painter Francisco Goya’s Le Petit Prisonnier, Wittman founded the Prisoner Wine Company in Napa Valley with a mission to break the chains of oppression and embrace creativity. Over 20 years ago, she combined some of California’s best and rarest grape varieties into the Prisoner red blend. Its release caused quite a rumble in the wine industry, and upscale American red blends have resurged in popularity ever since. In addition, Wittman uses the Prisoner Wine Company platform to drive prison reform in the United States!

Amuse Bouche: Blindfold Blanc de Noir

Firstly, we begin with a white-pressed Pinot Noir blend that also includes small amounts of Viognier and Gewurztraminer. Light, citrusy sips complement our chef’s colossal crab salad drizzled with a Champagne vanilla dressing.

First Course: The Prisoner Chardonnay

This full-bodied, oaky Chardonnay blend brings sweet flavors of baked apple and crème brûlée to balance out our savory carrot-ginger bisque.

Second Course: The Prisoner Cabernet

Up next, this Cabernet blend features tasting notes of dark fruits, vanilla, and nutmeg. The wine’s robust mouthfeel helps it stand up to our beef short rib finished with beurre rouge atop a cauliflower purée dusted with carrot powder.

Main Course: The Prisoner Red Blend

Of course, our dinner wouldn’t be complete without the flagship Prisoner wine — or a Ruth’s Chris steak! Five red varietals all come together in this iconic blend.
