Why the Sweet Potato Casserole is Such a Popular Holiday Side Dish

The holiday season is synonymous with family gatherings, laughter, and the joy of sharing meals around a table. Traditional dishes make these moments special, bringing warmth and comfort and setting the tone for memories that last a lifetime.

From savory mains like roasted turkey, glazed ham, and prime rib to delectable side dishes, every part of a holiday meal promises a tasty treat. The Sweet Potato Casserole is one side dish that holds a cherished spot on holiday tables. In fact, with its rich history and irresistible flavors, it has become a beloved holiday staple.

The Sweet Potato Casserole at Ruth’s Chris Steak House has been one of the most popular sides on our Dinner Menu from the very beginning. Learn more about the history behind this side dish – or learn how to make it yourself this holiday season. And remember – you can order this dish at a Ruth’s Chris Steak House restaurant near you.

A Glimpse at the History of a Popular Side Dish

Sweet potatoes have long been a part of holiday feasts in America. Indigenous people had already been cultivating this nutrient-rich tuber before European settlers arrived on the continent. By the 19th century, sweet potatoes had become popular in Southern cuisine, often baked or mashed and paired with various seasonings.

The sweet potato casserole as we know it today began to evolve in the early 20th century, when creative recipes featuring toppings like marshmallows or pecans started to appear, blurring the line between side dishes and desserts.

The Perfect Blend of Sweet and Savory

Unlike many other side dishes, the Sweet Potato Casserole strikes the perfect balance between sweet and savory. This unique flavor profile satisfies different taste preferences in one bite, possibly one of the main reasons this casserole is such a popular holiday side dish.

Imagine the base of creamy, sweet potatoes subtly spiced with ingredients like brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg! Top that with a crispy layer of toasted pecans or golden-brown marshmallows, and you have a delightful contrast of textures.

A Nostalgic Tradition for Generations

For many families, serving Sweet Potato Casserole during the holidays is a tradition that spans generations. Whether made from a family recipe passed down through the years or the recipe straight from the Ruth’s Chris chefs, the Sweet Potato Casserole brings back fond memories of past gatherings. Plus, the tradition of making it with family, sharing stories as it comes together, and savoring it alongside other entrees has won it a place among favorite holiday side dishes.

Easy to Customize and Adapt

Another reason the Sweet Potato Casserole is so popular is its versatility! For a slightly crunchy texture, some recipes highlight a rich, crumbly, buttery topping made with brown sugar and pecans. Others keep it simple with a classic marshmallow topping, creating a light, caramelized layer that metals into the dish as it bakes.

Make Sweet Potato Casserole at Home

You are in luck, because the chefs at Ruth’s Chris are excited to share the recipe we use in all of our restaurants with YOU! Our recipe is available right on our website, so we hope you will make it this holiday season – or any day of the week – to delight everyone eating at your table.

The Holiday Must-Have Side Dish

The combination of rich flavors, nostalgic ties and customizable options makes the Sweet Potato Casserole a beloved holiday side dish. But the main reason is really simple—it’s just delicious. Make a reservation at Ruth’s Chris and try our take on the Sweet Potato Casserole today.

About Moët & Chandon: Excellence in Effervescence Since 1743

Hailing from Épernay in the heart of the Champagne region, trader Claude Moët began shipping his wine to Paris under the name Moët et Cie in 1743. As the demand for sparkling wine skyrocketed among the nobles and aristocrats, so did Moët’s popularity.

Over the decades, the prestigious Champagne house remained in the family, led by Claude’s grandson Remy Moët. Remy brought his son-in-law, Pierre-Gabriel Chandon de Briailles, into the fold in 1833, hence the Moët & Chandon name.

To this day, Moët & Chandon celebrates life’s memorable moments with a range of unique champagnes for every occasion. But while versatile, every single bottle still exhibits the brand’s distinctive style, thanks to centuries of expertise.

Featured Wines on the Moët & Chandon Dinner Menu

For our last TasteMaker dinner of 2024, sip on a curated collection of four sparkling selections and feast on five chef-inspired Ruth’s Chris courses:

Amuse Bouche: L’Atelier Rouge Champagne Cocktail

Our wine dinner begins boldly with a cocktail of Moët Imperial and Atelier Vie red absinthe. This fizzy, botanical concoction brings out the flavors of our crostini: an herbed toasted baguette topped with goat cheese, apricot, crushed walnut, and fresh chives.

First Course: Moët Imperial

Up next, experience the greatness of the flagship Moët Imperial all on its own. A vibrant bouquet, sumptuous white fruit flavors, and an elegant mouthfeel indulge the senses. In between sips, cut into our croquette filled with brandade—a rich Mediterranean spread of flaky salted cod and potato purée—and drizzled with citron oil and tartar sauce.

Second Course: Moët Imperial Rosé

The iconic Imperial gets a romantic red fruit update, while still embodying the Moët & Chandon style of brightness, seductive palate, and elegant maturity. At Ruth’s Chris, we’ve paired it with an equally amorous dish of butter-poached lobster in a truffle and caviar sauce. (Chef kiss!)

Main Course: Moët Grand Vintage 2015

Each Grand Vintage at Moët & Chandon expresses the cellar master’s interpretation of the year, and the 76th vintage of 2015 is certainly one for the books. In his eyes, Grand Vintage 2015 demonstrates intensity followed by light. Powerful fruit flavors from a top-tier harvest of red-skinned grapes give way to fresh, floral nuances on the finish.

Of course, this awakening wouldn’t be complete without a Ruth’s Chris filet! We’ve finished this one with a Champagne-roquefort crust, accompanied by fondant potatoes and ratatouille.

Dessert Course: French Apple Tart

Last but not least, our dinner ends on a sweet note with an apple tart, dressed with an apricot glaze, vanilla bean ice cream, and caramel tuile served alongside our signature coffee and tea service.

Learn More About Villa Antinori and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars

For September’s TasteMaker dinner at Ruth’s Chris Steak House, you’re in for a double-feature: Villa Antinori and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars! These two wine juggernauts exemplify their respective regions of Tuscany and Napa Valley. You’ll get to taste the best of both their offerings at our can’t-miss dinner, anchored by five fall-inspired Ruth’s Chris courses all for just $135 per person plus tax and tip.

Continue reading to learn more about Villa Antinori and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, our featured September wineries. Then make your reservation for an upcoming wine dinner at your nearest Ruth’s Chris!

About Villa Antinori and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars: Worlds Collide

In 1385, Giovanni di Piero Antinori became a member of the Florentine Winemakers’ Guild, and his descendants have continued to uphold Tuscan wine traditions ever since. Marchese Niccolò Antinori created the Villa Antinori label in 1928 as a special tribute to the family home.

Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, on the other hand, traces its history back a mere five decades in Napa Valley. During the famous 1976 Judgment of Paris, the California winery’s Cabernet Sauvignon topped a group of hand-picked Bordeaux wines in a blind tasting, putting Napa on the map.

Now, our pairing of these Old World and New World wineries was no accident; there is a connection. Last year, Marchesi Antinori acquired Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars from Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, which purchased the latter in 2007. The Antinori family holds Stag’s Leap in high regard and looks forward to infusing their deeply rooted family values into the brand.

Featured Wines on the Villa Antinori and Stag’s Leap Dinner Menu

Our September TasteMaker dinner features two whites and two reds from each winery, all served alongside exceptional Ruth’s Chris cuisine:

Amuse Bouche: Villa Antinori Toscana Bianco “White Super Tuscan”

Firstly, we open with Villa Antinori’s Tuscan white made with Trebbiano grapes, displaying notes of golden apples, pineapples, and bananas. These fruity flavors pair well with our tempura shrimp and diced pears, served with a honey soy sauce for dipping.

First Course: Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars “Karia” Chardonnay

Derived from Greek, “Karia” means graceful, a word that describes this Chardonnay to a T. Its fruit flavors of citrus and melon complement our savory rosemary-crusted chicken topped with a smoked strawberry marinara sauce.

Second Course: Villa Antinori Rosso Toscana “Super Tuscan”

Sangiovese-led, this red blend is as Tuscan as it gets, boasting a flavor profile of dark fruits, cedar, tobacco, and spices. Alternate sips with bites of our veal osso bucco ravioli, swimming in a demi-zinfandel reduction and finished with parmesan and chives.

Entrée: Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars “Artemis” Cabernet Sauvignon

Named after the Greek goddess of the hunt, this Cab Sav with notes of berries and dark chocolate illustrates the importance of grape picking. One sip will reveal that Stag’s Leap chose the cream of the crop. Of course, we serve this Cabernet with a Ruth’s Chris filet, slathered in espresso barbecue butter. On the side, enjoy baked potatoes au gratin, roasted artichokes, and wild mushrooms.

Dessert Course: Dark Chocolate Crème Brûlée

What steakhouse dining experience would be complete without dessert? Riding on the coattails of the Cabernet, our dark chocolate crème brûlée closes out the meal. Instead of wine for this final course, we’ll provide coffee and tea service.

Learn More About Casamigos and Our Upcoming Tequila Tasting Event

For our upcoming TasteMaker dinner, we’re taking a break from the wine world and heading south of the border for a spirited evening. That’s right, we’re hosting a tequila tasting event at Ruth’s Chris Steak House! Join us for five courses and cocktails featuring actor George Clooney’s popular Casamigos tequila —all for just $130 per person plus tax and tip.

Continue reading to learn more about Casamigos tequila, the star of our August TasteMaker dinner, or reserve your spot for an upcoming tequila tasting event at a Ruth’s Chris Steak House near you today.

About Casamigos: Tequila with a Cult Following

In 2013, George Clooney founded Casamigos tequila with his famous pals Rande Gerber and Mike Meldman, and it wasn’t long before their new tequila brand took the agave spirits market by storm. Just one year later, Casamigos tequila won Double Gold in the prestigious San Francisco Spirits Competition!

So, what inspired these three amigos to make their own tequila? Clooney says that they sensed a need for tequila that you wouldn’t want to mask with lime, salt, or sugary mixers. To achieve their goal, the trio turned to old-world wisdom. Casamigos employees hand-select each blue weber agave plant from the rich, red clay of the Jalisco Highlands in Mexico. Then they slow-roast the piñas—the agave hearts—in traditional clay ovens. The result? Tequila that’s just as ideal for sipping as for making our handcrafted cocktails at Ruth’s Chris. Whether you’re curious about the Silver, Reposado, or Añejo varieties, come to our tequila tasting event to experience the complete lineup!

Featured Tequila Cocktails on the Casamigos Dinner Menu

August’s TasteMaker dinner presents four cocktails crafted with Casamigos tequila served alongside five chef-inspired courses:

Amuse Bouche: Casa NOLA

To start the evening, we gave a New Orleans classic, the Pimm’s cup, a tequila twist. Casamigos Blanco takes the place of gin alongside club soda and lemon juice, while black salt and fresh fruit garnish the rim. At the same time, snack on a tetela: grilled corn masa dough filled with black beans, shredded quesillo, and tomatillo relish and then topped with Mexican crema.

First Course: Sueño Tropical Fizz

Another Casamigos Blanco creation, this cocktail features pineapple-cucumber fresca, fresh lemon juice, agave, and club soda. Alternate sips with bites of the tortita ahogada, a Jaliscan handheld that directly translates to, “submarine sandwich.” We fill the Guadalajaran sourdough bread with pork carnitas and refried beans and serve it swimming in hot sauce.

Second Course: Cristalino Citrus Margarita

What kind of tequila tasting event would this be without a margarita? This one showcases the Casamigos Cristalino, aged in white oak barrels and then filtered in charcoal to retain the notes of the cask while intensifying the flavor of the agave. The filtration process also removes the golden color of the reposado, resulting in the tequila’s crystal-clear appearance—hence the name. To make the margarita, we add fresh orange and lime juice, salted agave, and a spritz of orange blossom water. Sip and savor with our birria taco of chicken and lamb, served with Mexican rice and fried beans.

Entrée: Sparkling Añejo Sunset

And of course, the evening wouldn’t be complete without a Ruth’s Chris steak, either! Topped with tomato and roasted poblano peppers, this filet comes with potatoes and chorizo plus a Mexican street corn salad. As for the cocktail, Casamigos Añejo takes center stage. “Old” in English, Añejo invokes tradition with a slow fermentation process that gives the tequila a caramel color and flavor. In our sparkling sunset creation, we combine it with amaro for the hue and sparkling wine for the bubbles.

Dessert Course: Cocadas de Chocolate

Last but not least, don’t forget dessert! Our exclusive tequila tasting event ends on a sweet note with these chocolate-coconut treats drizzled with crème anglaise. We’ll say “adios” to tequila for this final course, providing coffee and tea service.

Our Favorite White Wine and Seafood Pairings to Enjoy at Ruth’s Chris

During the summer, few meals hit the spot quite like a succulent seafood dinner. The only thing that could make the experience even better is a cool glass of white wine! Luckily, we have both white wine and seafood in spades here at Ruth’s Chris Steak House.

Now, you may be wondering which selections to pair together. While you really can’t go wrong with any combination, allow us to share our favorite white wine and seafood pairings to enjoy the next time you dine with us at Ruth’s Chris!

Garlic-Crusted Chilean Sea Bass and Pinot Grigio

The old adage of, “White fish, white wine,” certainly holds true with this pairing! Known for its bright acidity, Pinot Grigio intensifies the flavors of the relatively mild sea bass. That said, don’t mistake “mild” to mean “boring.” At Ruth’s Chris, we serve our Chilean sea bass in a panko-garlic crust drizzled with lemon butter, all over a bed of baby spinach. Therefore, you’ll savor a symphony of tastes and textures, complemented perfectly by the refreshing Pinot Grigio.

Broiled Salmon Fillet and Chardonnay

As a meatier fish, salmon can stand up to a fuller-bodied white wine. We broil our salmon with lemon, parsley, and butter—the last of which especially helps it pair well with a buttery Chardonnay. You’ll find plenty of Chardonnay options on our award-winning wine list at Ruth’s Chris, so make sure that you choose one that has been oaked. At the same time, you’ll need at least some acidity to balance out the richness of the salmon!

Barbecued Shrimp and Sauvignon Blanc

Our barbecued shrimp appetizer was so popular that it became an entrée! In this dish, large barbecued shrimp in a sauce of white wine, garlic butter, and spices sit atop mashed potatoes. With such a savory meal, you’ll want a crisp sip to cut through the indulgence. That’s where the Sauvignon Blanc comes in! This wine’s herbaceous, citrus notes will lighten up the meal while still keeping it satisfying.

More White Wine and Seafood Pairings to Enjoy at Ruth’s Chris

In addition to our entrées, we have plenty of seafood appetizers that pair wonderfully with our white wines! Check them out below:

Pair with Riesling: Spicy Shrimp or Calamari

Both of these fried seafood starters bring the heat: the shrimp with a spicy cream sauce and the calamari with an Asian chili sauce. Either way, your tongue will welcome the taste of a sweet Riesling after each bite.

Pair with Prosecco: Shrimp Cocktail or Crab Cakes

Prosecco’s effervescence elevates light party dishes such as our shrimp cocktail or crab cakes. Plus, the sparkling wine’s gentle sweetness, crisp acidity, and overall brightness mellow out any brininess or fishy flavors.

Pair with a White Blend: Chilled Seafood Tower

If your group wants it all and can’t decide, then the chilled seafood tower is the way to go! With lobster, shrimp, crab meat, and market-fresh seafood, you don’t want to narrow your wine down to one varietal. A white blend is versatile enough to pair well with it all.
